FLYING HIGH
Emporia State travels to Wichita to take on Newman in a non-conference game and continue its strong start to the season.
LAST TIME OUT
Gavin Brown posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Emporia State men to an 83-70 win over Missouri S&T at W.L. White Auditorium on November 20. Kaleb Wright was the Hornets’ top scorer with 18 points, while Tre Boutilier added 13 as five Hornets reached double-digits in scoring. Brown also the Emporia State with five assists and three steals. The Hornets shot 54.0% from the field, and went 23 of 30 from the foul line.
The Hornets never trailed in the game and scored the first seven points. Emporia State extended its lead to as many as 17 in the first half, when the Hornets led 29-12 at the 6:09 mark of the first half. Emporia State was led by Terrence Moore in the first half who had 10 points on 5 of 5 shooting, while adding two steals.
THE COACHES
Shaun Vandiver is 13-19 in his second season at Emporia State. A first round draft pick by the Golden State Warriors in 1991 spent ten years as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level. As a player he was a key component in Hutchinson CC’s tournament run to the 1988 NJCAA National Championship before earning first-team All-Big 8 honors at Colorado.
Mark Potter is 265-155 in his 15th year at Newman. He is 3-3 against Emporia State.
SCOUTING NEWMAN
Newman moved to 4-0 after defeating Fort Hays State on its home floor 80-78 on Nov. 24. Shamar Acuay scored 29 for the Jets while Darrell Taylor added 17. Newman came back to win after allowing Fort Hays to score the first 11 points. Acuay leads Newman in scoring, averaging 17.8 points per game while Marquis Cuyler adds 10.3. Taylor is the Jets’ leading rebounder, averaging 5.0 per contest.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 29th meeting between the two squads with Emporia State holding a 19-9 overall edge. The Jets have won three out of the past four meetings.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE JETS
Emporia State and Newman last met on Dec. 7, 2011 in Emporia, a game won by the Jets 77-60. Tola Lawal led the Hornets with 17 points, while Taylor Euler added 14. Troy Pierce pulled down 12 rebounds to lead all players. Four Newman players scored in double figures, and were led by Bobby Wesley with 22 points. The Jets led the game from start to finish, and held the Hornets to 36.7 shooting from the field.
