October 23, 2012- The Emporia State volleyball team hosted third-ranked Washburn in the Turnpike Tussle at White Auditorium, where the Lady Blues emerged with a 25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20 victory in Emporia, Kan.
Katie Deutschmann came up just short of recording her second triple double of the season, posting 10 kills, 30 assists and eight digs. Paige Vanderpool led the Hornets attack with 16 kills and completed the double-double with 12 digs. Meg Schwartz led all players with 29 digs. The top hitter for the Hornets was Morgan Buckner, who registered seven kills from 15 attempts, with two errors.
Washburn held the lead for the majority of the first two sets, as there were only three lead changes. The Lady Blues closed out the first set on a 5-0 run to win 25-18.
In the second set, Emporia State built some momentum after finding themselves down 22-11. The Hornets went on an 11-2 run to make the score 24-22. Ultimately, the Lady Blues were able to hold onto win the set 25-22.
The third set was the most closely contested, as it saw 14 ties and nine lead changes. A block by Courtney Haring and Carly Spicer made the score 24-22 after neither team seized a clear advantage. An emphatic kill by Vanderpool clinched a 25-23 win for the Hornets.
Washburn came back to win the fourth and final set, 25-20, holding Emporia State to a .063 hitting percentage.
Emporia State is now 16-8, 6-5 MIAA. Washburn improves to 24-1, 11-1 MIAA.
Emporia State plays another top five team when #4 Nebraska-Kearney visits White Auditorium for Dig Pink Night on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
