October 12, 2012 – Emporia State won its fifth straight match with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-10 win over Missouri Southern in Joplin, Mo.
Katie Deutschmann led the Hornets with eight kills, a .583 hitting percentage, and added 17 assists. Raney Okeson, Carly Spicer and Paige Vanderpool chipped in seven kills apiece. Meg Schwartz registered a team high 15 digs, while Courtney Haring was the Hornets’ block leader with three block assists. Sydney Hartman led Emporia State in assists with 18.
Emporia State posted a .311 hitting percentage while Missouri Southern hit .045 on the night. The Lions committed 24 hitting errors compared to the Hornets’ 12.
The Hornets opened set one by building an 11-3 three lead early. Missouri Southern closed the gap to 15-12 before Emporia State went on a 5-1 run to stay ahead for good and win the first set 25-17.
Set two was closer with both teams trading points early in the set. Emporia State gained a 15-11 lead after capitalizing on four straight points courtesy of kills by Haring and Okeson and two Missouri Southern hitting errors, ultimately taking the set 25-17.
Emporia State took control of the third set after going on an 8-1 run with the score tied at 5-5. The Hornets hit .375 in set three and held Missouri Southern to a .000 hitting percentage.
Emporia State is now 14-6, 4-3 MIAA. Missouri Southern remains winless at 0-20, 0-9 MIAA.
Emporia State travels to Bolivar, Mo. to play Southwest Baptist tomorrow at 2 p.m.
