ESU outscores MWSU 18-10 late, but comes up short

January 25, 2012 -- The Emporia State men's basketball team outscored Missouri Western 18-10 over the final 2:45, but the Griffons hit just enough shots from the free throw line to hold on for a 72-66 victory. ESU trailed by as much as 15 in the first half, but would get as close as four points in the final minute.

Missouri Western shot .511 as ESU shot .397, but the Hornets made seven three pointers to keep the game close. MWSU would lead 35-23 at the half and lead by 14 with 2:45 to play. ESU shot .421 in the second half and hit .857 of their free throws to help close the gap.

Tola Lawal led the way with a career high 28 points and also had five rebounds. Chris Sights hit a career high four three pointers as he added 20 points in the Hornet effort. Justin Ikhide and Troy Pierce both had eight rebounds to lead all players as ESU outrebounded the  Griffons 37-30 on the night.

ESU will face Truman as they head back out on the road on Jan. 28 for a scheduled 3 p.m. tip-off from Kirksville, Mo.
