ESU falls in five at #5 Washburn

October 11, 2011 -- The Emporia State volleyball team led at one point 2-1 and was the first MIAA to take a set from #5 Washburn as they fell 3-2 on the road. ESU outhit Washburn .159 to .121 on the night in the 22-25, 25-18, 27-25, 17-25 and 12-15 loss.

The Hornets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set and led 8-6 later in the set. Washburn would use a 9-2 run to take a 15-10 lead and fought to a 25-22 victory. In the second set ESU jumped out to a 10-5 lead and never looked back as they rolled to 25-18 victory. In the third set ESU would lead by as much as 21-12 before Washburn used an 11-2 run to tie the match at 23-23. ESU would answer with two straight kills by Brianna Kaiser after the set was tied at 25-25 for the 27-25 win.

In the fourth set ESU tied the match at 8-8 before WU went on an 8-3 run on their way to a 25-17 victory. In the final set Washburn jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but ESU answered to cut the lead to 9-8 at one point. The Hornets would get no closer though as WU took the final set 15-12.

Katie Deutschmann had the first triple-double since Ting Liu recorded the feat last season as she finished with 13 kills, 22 assists and 12 digs on Nov. 17 against West Texas A&M. She also added two blocks on the night helping account for 36.5 points on the night. Brianna Kaiser added a double-double with 11 kills and 23 digs and five blocks. Morgan Buckner had 14 kills and hit a match high .483.

Amanda Gerety also had a double-double finishing with 40 assists and 13 digs and five blocks. Paige Vanderpool had nine kills and had 22 digs. Courtney Haring had eight blocks on the night and added six kills. Meg Schwartz had 25 digs in the match for ESU.

The Hornets will step outside the MIAA when they face Nebraska-Omaha on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. from W. L. White Auditorium.
