September 14, 2011 -- Katie Deutschmann came just one dig shy of a triple double as the #22 Emporia State volleyball team swept Northwest Missouri State 3-0 in the MIAA opener for both teams. The Hornets hit .355 as a team on the way to the 25-19, 25-21, 25-20 victory.

The Bearcats only led the Hornets for 16 points in the entire match as ESU only trailed 1-0 to open the second set after coming from behind to take a 9-8 lead in the first set. The Hornets finished with six blocks as a team as they held NWMSU to just .231 hitting on the night.

Deutschmann finished with 12 kills, 15 assists and nine digs while hitting .423 with three block assists for the match. Courtney Haring finished with nine kills and added two blocks while hitting a match high .692. Caitlyn Murry also had nine kills to go along with four blocks and a career high .667 hitting percentage for the match. Meg Schwartz added 21 digs for the Hornets while Paige Vanderpool added 11 digs. Brianna Kaiser added nine kills and hit .350 for the Hornets.

ESU (6-3, 1-0 MIAA) will return to the floor on Sept. 17 when they face Truman with a scheduled 1 p.m. first serve from Kirksville, Mo.
