September 7, 2011 -- The #17 Emporia State volleyball team came from behind in two sets and rolled to a victory in the fifth in a 3-2 win over Rockhurst. The Hornets hit .300 as a team and had nine blocks on the way to a 22-25, 25-15, 15-18, 24-26 and 15-6 victory.
In the first set ESU was down as much as 21-16 before coming back to cut the lead to 24-22, but fell in the first set 25-22 to Rockhurst.
In the second set the Hornets trailed 4-1 early, but went on a 5-0 run to take a 6-4 lead and did not look back on the way to a 25-15 victory. The Hornets hit .424 for the set as they evened the scored at one apiece.
In the third set ESU hit .343 as they trailed 7-3 at one point before using a second 5-0 run to even the score. ESU would then go on a 6-2 run after the match set tied at 6-6 and would not look back in a 25-18 victory.
In the fourth set the two teams saw four ties before Rockhurst pulled out a 26-24 win. The Hornets would rebound in the fifth set though as they hit a match best .429 on the way to a 15-6 final set victory.
Paige Vanderpool had a career night as she finished with a career high 26 kills and 24 digs while hitting .410 for the match. Brianna Kaiser also finished with a double-double as she had a career high 18 kills to go along with 19 digs. Amanda Gerety kept the career night going as she finished with a career high 46 assists. Morgan Buckner also set career highs in both kills with 15 and hitting percentage at .423 on the night.
The Hornets will return to action this weekend at the UCM Peggy martin Challenge as they face #3 Tampa at 11 a.m. on Sept. 10 from Warrensburg, Mo.
