September 30, 2011 -- The #25 Emporia State volleyball team had double figure blocks for the second straight match, but could not overcome #20 Angelo State in the final three sets in a 3-2 loss. The Hornets had 12 blocks and five service aces in the 25-17, 25-21, 21-25, 18-25 and 10-15 loss.
ESU jumped out 8-3 early in the first set and did not look back in the 25-17 win. In the second set ESU scored four of the last five points to put ASU away 25-21. In the third set ASU would not let ESU get any closer than 10-7 as they earned the 25-17 victory. In the fourth set the Rambelles used a 5-0 run and 3-0 run to close out the 25-18 win. In the final set ESU would tie things up at 6-6 before a 3-0 run by ASU put away the 15-10 finale.
For ESU Katie Deutschmann had her fourth double-double in five matches as she finished with 14 kills and 20 assist while hitting .357 for the match. Amanda Gerety had her second double-double of the season as she had 31 assists and 10 digs for the Hornets. Carly Spicer had a career high seven blocks along with nine kills. Brianna Kaiser had 16 digs for ESU to go along with eight kills and five blocks. Meg Schwartz pushed her double figure dig matches streak to 18 as she had 24 on the night.
ESU will face Abilene Christian at 9 a.m. on Oct. 1 from Lee Arena in Topeka, Kan.
