ESU Soccer Pitch
A former player's conversation with her employer and a long term relationship between the employer and his accountant were the starting points for the Emporia State soccer program to have a secure on campus venue to play in for the first time in school history.
"It's exciting for our girls because we've never had an environment that is enclosed that we can call our own," said Sailer. "It kind of makes our house a home."
A conversation between former All-MIAA goalkeeper Yadira Rivera and Richard Porter laid the ground work for the new the new wrought iron fence. It is anchored with six limestone covered anchors at the four corners and either side of midfield. There are two indentions along the west side to allow for the placement of bleachers for fans.
"The Trustees of the Preston Family Trust are pleased to support the development of the ESU North Athletics Field – in particular the infrastructure of the Hornet Soccer Pitch," said Dr. John Rich, trustee of the Preston Family Trust. "The goal of this gift is to enhance the experience of some of our women student-athletes as well as add to the overall quality of the athletics facilities for all to enjoy."
The Hornets have played in a variety of venues over the program's first 17 years in existence. They started playing at the DeBauge Family Complex, formerly known as TRYSA, during their inaugural season in 2001. The Hornets drew a then NCAA Division II record1,820 fans to their match with Northern Colorado on Sept. 22, 2002. Emporia State played their first on campus matches during the 2008 season and played full seasons at the ESU Pitch from 2009-12. During the 2013-14 seasons all games were played at Emporia HS.  The Hornets returned to campus full time beginning with the 2015 season.
"The Prestons' primary interests were supporting Emporia State University and the Emporia Community," said Rich. "While supporting all activities and programs at ESU, they were most interested in supporting the accounting program and women's athletics. This gift is in harmony with their priorities."
Another improvement to the pitch is the addition of a portable, covered press box that can seat eight to replace the previous riser and tent set up that had been used. The press box was constructed by ESU Facilities, saving the university the cost of purchasing one from an outside vendor.
"The fence and press box should greatly improve the game day experience for both our student-athletes, coaches, fans and support personnel," said Emporia State Director of Athletics Kent Weiser. "These additions show Emporia State commitment to improving our facilities in all sports."
