J. Arthur "Shorty" Hoch was a standout performer on some of Emporia State University’s most successful football teams. He lettered four years (1924-27) and also captained the football squad his senior season. Hoch quarterbacked the ’26 and ’27 teams, the only undefeated teams in the school’s history. The ’26 team outscored its opponents 149-3 while rolling to a 7-0 record. Hoch helped lead the ’27 squad to a 7-0-1 record. He also quarterbacked the 1925 team as a sophomore. He received all-conference and all-state recognition his junior and senior seasons. Hoch remained active in Emporia State University athletics after his playing career ended. He served as head timer and finish judge for many years at ESU track & field meets.
