Phil Delavan coached 35 All-Americans including seven national champions in his twelve year tenure at Emporia State. Five school records set under his watch still stand over thirty years later. His teams consistently placed in the top ten at the NAIA Championships and he was the coach of ESU's first women's track and field team. In addition to his duties at ESU, Delavan was the field events coach for the 1972 United States Women's Olympic Team and served as coach of the 1970 and 1973 United States track and field teams at the World University Games.
