Paul Whiteley performed in cross country and track while at Emporia State University. He transferred from Morehead State (Ky.) in 1957 and lettered in both sports at ESU during 1958-59. He was part of ESU’s NAIA championship cross country teams during both seasons, finishing third in 1958 and second in 1959 while winning the NCAA college division championships both years. Whiteley captured numerous individual track championships, especially in 1959 when he was the NAIA champion in the mile and two-mile runs; setting meet and school records in the latter. Whiteley concluded his track career by winning the NCAA championship in the three-mile run, setting a new school record with a time of 13:59.1.
