With his induction, Marvin Hamman becomes the third member of the 1940 Hornet backfield to become a member of the ESU Hall of Honor.  That backfield was coined "the best backfield of any college or university in the state of Kansas." Hamman, who often received less notoriety than backfield mates Keith Caywood and Wayne Goldsmith, was the true workhorse of Coach Fran Welch’s  innovative double-wing offense. His gritty determination and style of play led to all-conference accolades from both the Topeka Capital-Journal and the Associated Press. He also was selected to play in the 1940 Missouri-Kansas all-star game in Kansas City.  Hamman was a four-year letterwinner and the fullback on Welch’s All-Time Dream Team. After World War II, Hamman taught industrial arts and coached football, basketball and track in the Garden City School System for 15 years before giving up coaching to concentrate on his teaching duties.  Hamman continued to teach at Garden City for another 21 years before retiring in 1983.
