An all-conference and all-region performer for the Hornet baseball team, Darting set a conference record in stolen bases and runs scored as a senior. He began his teaching and coaching career in 1973 at Silver Lake HS where he won his first state high school championship in basketball. He was an assistant basketball coach at Kansas State in 1985-86 before moving on to coach basketball and softball at Allen County CC from 1986-95. He had some of his greatest success in 13 years as the head coach at Highland Park HS, where he went 259-53 (.830) in 13 years as with 10 state tournament appearances, won four state titles (2004, 2007-09) and four second-place finishes.
