Thompson competed in both football and track and field for the Hornets. He was a member of sprint medley relay team that placed at several of the major meets across the nation. After his playing days, he became a successful high school teacher and coach. Thompson's track teams at St. Louis Sumner HS placed in the top three at the Missouri State Championships six times, winning the state title in 1973 and won eight Public High School League championships, despite not having a home track. He was an eight-time St. Louis Inner City Black Athletic Association Coach of the Year and inducted into the Missouri Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 1983.
