Hoyt played football for the Horents from 1938-41. A native of Upland, Kansas, he was a four-year letterwinner at quarterback. A perennial All-Central Conference and All-Kansas selection, he was part of a fantastic backfield and was labeled as one of the best players in the state. He also served as a punter and was accomplished using the drop kick method for field goal attempts. He helped a talented squad contend for a conference championship in 1940 as the Hornets finished with a 6-2 record. A team captain in 1941, he joined Coach Fran Welch and fellow seniors Keith Caywood and Wayne Goldsmith on a Kansas collegiate all-star team which defeated Fort Riley in Manhattan.
