Francis Swaim, competed in track & field for the Hornets from 1934-36.
Swaim established the Missouri Valley AAU long jump record in 1939. Records indicate that his leap of 24’ 11 3/4" still stands today.
Swaim, however, is more noted for his contributions to the coaching profession. While coaching track & field at Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, his teams won the state cross country titles in 1965 and accumulated six Sunflower League titles. He coached 15 individual outdoor state champions and 20 individual indoor state champions.
He received numerous coaching and officiating honors, including the "Sammie Dubin Award" for leadership to youth in track & field in the Kansas City metropolitan area. He served as president of the Kansas City Kansas Coaches Association in 1961-62. Swaim also served as an official at the NAIA National Indoor Championships for 25 years and as an official at the Kansas Relays for the past 20 years.
