Richard E. "Dick" Mawdsley was a four-year football letterman described by his coaches as an "on-the-field general" and "the brains of the team." Coach Fran Welch named the Pratt native to his "Dream Team" as a quarterback for his outstanding signal calling, skillful ball carrying, and powerful blocking. In 1937 and 1938 when Mawdsley served as co-captain of the football team, the news media acclaimed him the best blocker in the conference. He received several all-conference and all-state honors as quarterback. Mawdsley also lettered two years in basketball as a guard. In athletics and other endeavors, Mawdsley’s leadership, determination, and dedication were a continual inspiration to his associates.
