David Harris was an 11-time MIAA Coach of the Year and the 2001 Women's NCAA Division II National Track & Field Coach of the Year. Under his guidance, the Hornets established themselves as a nationally prominent NCAA Division II power in both track and cross country as his athletes earned 198 All-American honors, including 18 NCAA II individual championships between 1995 and 2011. He led Emporia State to 15 top ten national team finishes and his women's teams scored at the national outdoor championships every year he coached. The men's team placed fourth at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor National Track & Field Championships, their highest place as a Division II school. The Hornets won ten MIAA team championships in his career, including a sweep of the men's and women's outdoor track titles in 1999. His teams finished in the top three of the league in track or cross country 52 times in 114 MIAA Championship meets.
