Stromgren played basketball for ESU from 1984-86. A native of Abilene, Stromgren was a point guard and captain of ESU's 1985-86 men's basketball team that went 31-5 and captured the CSIC and District 10 championships. He was the District 10 Co-MVP in 1985-86 with teammate Brian Robinson. Stromgren was an NAIA All-American in 1986. He was a two-time Academic All-American. He holds the E-State single season assist record with 256 and the career record with 458, despite only playing two seasons.  He is the only Hornet to be named ESU Student-Athlete of the Year two straight years, earning the honor in 1984-85 and 1985-86.
