Led by All-Americans Susan Stine and Amy Potter the Emporia State women placed second at the 1986 NAIA National Cross Country Championships in Kenosha, Wisconsin. It is the highest national placing for an Emporia State women's cross country team. Emporia State's five scorers at the national meet -Stine, Potter, Gloria Bates, Trudy Searcy, and Joni Dutton - all finished within one minute of Stine's 14th place time of 18:15over the five kilometer course and were in the top 75 of the 239 competitors. They won the Central States Intercollegiate Conference (CSIC) and District 10 championships. They finished in the top three of every meet during the season, with championships in three of the six regular season meets. Stine won the individual championship in three meets and finished second in two others while Potter took the District 10 Championship.
