The 1963 Hornet cross country team won the NCAA College Division meet by 130 points despite finishing second in the NAIA Championship Meet by four points.  The success continued in the spring of 1964 as ESU?won it’s first outdoor track &?field national championship.  The Hornets won three individual events and picked up a total of seven top three finishes. John Camien won gold in the 1500m and 5000m setting NAIA?records in both events. Ireland Sloan set a meet record in the 3000m steeplechase and at the time Hornet athletes held NAIA?records in six different events on the track.
