Emporia State won its third national title in four years with a two point win over instate rival Ft. Hays State in 1961. Richard Woelk and John Camien were the only two to earn All-Americans for the Hornets. The next year the Hornets dominated the field with a 45 point victory over runner-up Ft. Hays State to win its fourth cross country national team championship in five years. Ireland Sloan won the individual title to lead four ESU?athletes in the top 13. He was followed by All-Americans John Camien, Richard Woelk and Clarence Herpich.
