EMPORIA STATE FOOTBALL QUARTERBACK PREVIEW

Braxton Marstall to take over signal calling duties

August 16, 2016-Friday began an eight part series of position breakdowns for the Hornet football team. This morning's feature is on the quarterbacks with the specialists to follow this evening.
Quarterback
Sophomore Braxton Marstall is the favorite to take over the reigns of the high powered offense. Marstall got the starting nod as a true freshman at Missouri Western after subbing in for an injured Ty Reasnor (who had taken over at QB after Wilson was lost for the season following an injury in game four) against Ft. Hays State in 2014. Against the Tigers, Marstall led the Hornets to 21 second half points as he was 10 for 19 for 102 yards after the break. In his first start the following week at Missouri Western, Marstall led the Hornets to a 30-10 victory. He was 24 of 38 for 233 yards and two touchdowns as he became the third Hornet quarterback of the season to get a victory in a start. With Wilson staying healthy last year, Marstall was able to redshirt last season and is a third year sophomore this year.
Reasnor has left the program to persue other options, but red-shirt freshman T'Quan Wallace was impressive in the Hornets Spring Game. Jaylen Lowe was a contender for the quarterback spot at Division I Tulsa before opting to play basketball at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. He is out for football at Emporia State and the gifted athlete is expected to try both sports for the Hornets.
True freshman Pat Briningstool rounds out the quarterbacks in camp. He threw for over 4,300 yards in his career with 52 touchdowns at Chippewa Valley HS in Michigan.

Emporia State is set to return 14 starters, seven on offense and seven on defense, along with all of their specialists this year. Among the returners are four players that have had at least 100 yards receiving in a game, three players that have rushed for at least 100 yards in a game, and two players that totalled over 100 tackles last season. They are ranked #24 in the AFCA Preseason Coaches Poll, #23 in the Sporting News Preseason Top 25 poll and #12 in the Lindy's Preseason poll.

The Hornets will open the season on Thursday, September 1 against Northwest Missouri on Jones Field at Welch Stadium. It is a rematch of last season's NCAA Division II National Quarterfinal game.
