AFCA Preseason Poll

August 19, 2013-For the first time since 2004, the Emporia State football team will begin the season receiving votes in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) NCAA Division II Preseason Poll.  The Hornets are one of six MIAA teams receiving votes.

If the poll were carried out, the Hornets would be ranked #38 with 20 points.  The last time Emporia State was in the AFCA Preseason Poll they were #28 with 62 points after posting a 9-3 record, winning a share of the MIAA Championship and making their first appearance in the NCAA Playoffs.

The Hornets were 10-2 last season and went 9-2 in the MIAA to finish second in the regular season.  Emporia State won the final Kanza Bowl with a 45-38 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Emporia State will look to build on last year's ten win season and Kanza Bowl win with 14 returning starters and a total of 20 players that have started at least one game.  Preseason All-Americans Chris Poston and Jordan Sanders anchor the defense while four of five starters return on the offensive line.

The Hornets will open the season on Thursday, September 5 at Ft. Hays State and will play their home opener on Thursday, September 12 against Nebraska-Kearney.
