May 6, 2012-In a championship that saw 216 provisional marks, 45 of which were automatics, and seven meet records the Pittsburg State men and Lincoln women came away with team titles at the MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.  Lincoln’s Twishana Williams won four events while Central Missouri’s Lindsay Lettow scored in six events to share high point honors for the women with 40 points each. Central Missouri’s Laban Sialo won two events and finished second in another to earn high point honors for the men.

Williams won the 800m, 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m in a rare distance quadruple to lead the Blue Tigers to the team title.  Lettow scored in six events, winning the heptathlon and high jump while finishing third in the 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles and long jump as well as running a leg on the Jennies second place 1600m relay team.

Sialo won the 5000m and 10,000m and finished second in the 1500m to score 28 points for the Mules.

Six of the seven meet records came in the women’s competition with three of the record setting performances coming on Sunday.

Kate Walter of Northwest Missouri broke one of the older marks on the books as she won the women’s hammer.  She threw 190-09 (58.14m) to better Emporia State’s Laura Mayo’s mark of 186-03 (56.76m) set in 1998.

Lincoln’s Yanique Haye ran a 57.70 in the 400m hurdles to break Keniesha Jones MIAA record of 58.53 set last year by the fellow Blue Tiger.

Jenna Schmidt of Central Missouri broke another year old record when she went 42-01.50 (12.84m) in the triple jump.  She bettered the mark of 41-01.00 (12.52m) set by Darcie Schmitz of Ft. Hays State in 2011.

On Saturday Nickeisha Beaumont of Lincoln broke conference and stadium records that had stood for 21 and 16 years respectively.  Beaumont went 20-11.25 (6.38m) to break Busarind Rogers of Pittsburg State’s 1991 MIAA record of 20-03.75 and the stadium record of 20-08.0 first set by Chandra Lewis of Norfolk State at the 1995 NCAA Division II National Championships and tied by Melanie Lewis of Pitt State in 1996 at the MIAA Championships.

The women’s discus MIAA record was actually broken by two different people.  Brooke Swearingin of Ft. Hays State shattered Danee Jones of Missouri Southern’s 2005 record of 167-00 on her first throw of the prelims with a mark of 168-01 (51.24m).  Pittsburg State’s Larissa Richards then bettered Swearingin on her third throw with a toss of 169-03 (51.60m) to move up to third nationally and win the event.

The conference and stadium records in the women’s 100m hurdles also went down on Saturday.  Ladonna Richardson of Lincoln ran 13.33 to break the MIAA record of 13.66 set last year by Blue Tiger Judith Riley and Suzanne Dickinson’s stadium record of 13.44 set at the 1999 NCAA Division II National Championships.

Saturday saw the only men’s meet record get broken. Keenan Soles of Pittsburg State jumped 25-08.25 (7.83m) to automatically qualify for nationals and improve on his nation leading mark.  He broke Danny Holland’s record of 25-05.50 set in 1987, which was the longest standing field event record in the MIAA heading into this year’s championships.

There were 27 marks on the weekend that rank in the top five nationally with the top performance in the nation recorded in the men's and women's 100m and 400m hurdles and the women's long jump.
